ABOUT DAWN:

Dawn has been an animal lover her entire life. At the age of 8, she was shot with a BB gun while protecting a dog. Dawn’s career has revolved around helping people, but along the way, she has rescued, transported, and adopted several homeless dogs. Dawn has a Master’s Degree in Social Work from UNC Chapel Hill, and an undergraduate degree and teacher’s certificate from NC State University in Raleigh, NC. Dawn has been a counselor, social worker, and teacher over the course of her career. Dawn moved to Kosovo in 2021 to teach middle school English, and immediately got involved in rescuing and caring for street dogs. Her vision is to help educate the next generation on the value of dog ownership and the importance of humanely caring for street dogs. She hopes to partner with local veterinarians and government officials to make a permanent positive change in the country of Kosovo regarding the care and treatment of the street dog population.

ABOUT JULIE:

Julie is a long-time dog rescue volunteer, both for domestic and international dogs. After retiring from a career in nonprofit management, Julie spends most of her time helping with dog groups including Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue, Love Mutts, and Friends of Animals International. Julie lives in Raleigh, NC with her husband, Alan, their 3 resident dogs and an ever-changing team of foster dogs.

ABOUT NORA:

Nora is a high school student driven by a strong passion for helping animals. She has lived in three different countries and speaks four languages fluently. From a young age, her family has always cared for dogs, giving her a deep understanding and compassion for animals. After moving to Kosovo, Nora became aware of the severity of the street dog crisis, which inspired her to help and take action. Now, she is committed to educating others about dogs, emphasizing that they are not dangerous but often misunderstood and victims of abuse. In her free time, Nora enjoys reading, listening to music, spending time with her family, and volunteering at a local dog shelter.

ABOUT ELLIOT:

Elliot has always had a soft spot for animals. He has been surrounded by pets all of his life – hamsters, cats, dogs, fish, and even birds. Elliot has a passion for helping people and animals, and is deeply concerned about the environment and animal welfare. He holds a degree in Mathematics from Christopher Newport University and has additional experience in entomology, music, and computer science. In his free time, he enjoys playing music, video games, and spending time with his cat, Bug, as well as volunteering at a local animal shelter.

ABOUT SOPHIA:

During my first visit to Kosovo, street dogs were everywhere. As animal lovers, my family felt heartbroken and helpless. We knew we had to do something. Through Friends of Animals International, we’re turning that feeling into action—providing shelter, food, medical care, and loving homes to Kosovo’s street dogs. I focus on what I do best: social media and storytelling. I’ve seen the power of digital connection firsthand—I helped one of our rescues find her forever home through Instagram. When we share these dogs’ stories authentically, people don’t just scroll past—they stop, they care, and they act. As a younger board member, I bring fresh ideas, creative approaches to fundraising, and insight into how my generation engages with causes online. I’m here to help FAI reach new audiences and show people that making a difference can be as simple as a share, a follow, or opening their hearts to a dog who needs them. When I’m not advocating for animals, you can find me with my cat Violet, traveling, or discovering new restaurants.
